A free backlinks checker as a lead magnet for your SaaS

Visitors search for a free tool, find yours, and meet your product. The tool costs you nothing if you wire it right, and a fortune if you wire it carelessly.

Myth vs reality for free tools

MythReality
A free checker needs a paid API behind it.The actions domain, overview, stats and suggest are free and need no key.
CORS is open, so call us straight from the browser.Fine for the free actions. Paid ones need a key, and a key in front-end code is a public key.
Bots will not find it.They will, within days. Plan for scrapers from the start.
A free tool converts on its own.Only if the result page hands the visitor to the next step.

Design the page around what the free actions give you

Free means headline numbers. Domain name, an overview, and stats that fit above the fold.

Everything deeper, such as referring domain lists, anchors and top pages, sits behind a 2-credit call. Decide whether signed-in users of your product get it, because that is the cleanest upgrade story you will ever write.

Make the empty state useful. A visitor who types a typo should get suggestions from the free suggest action, and a visitor with a brand-new domain should read a sentence that explains why a young site shows little.

Our link graph refreshes about monthly. Say so on the page, in plain words, so nobody blames your tool for a missing link.

Abuse checklist before launch

  • Your server makes the call; the browser never sees an sk_ key.
  • Per-IP and per-session limits, with a friendly message on the limit.
  • A CAPTCHA only after the Nth lookup, not before the first.
  • Cache by domain and month so repeat searches cost nothing.
  • Block lookups of internal addresses and malformed domains at your proxy.
  • Log lookups per day so a spike is visible by lunchtime.
  • Robots rules for result pages: decide on purpose whether thin result pages should be indexed.

Where the visitor goes next

A lookup is a doorway. Three exits that fit a SaaS product:

Save this domain

Create a free workspace and track it monthly. Sign-in is the conversion.

See referring domains

The 2-credit detail view becomes a signed-in feature.

Compare with a rival

The compare action takes up to 20 domains for 1 credit. Offer it as step two.

Copy that sets expectations

Tell visitors what the tool is. Plain words win.

A headline such as 'See who links to any domain, from our own index' is honest and still sells. Add a sentence under the box saying the index refreshes monthly and that very new links may not show up yet, which stops complaints before they form.

Skip promises about rankings. The spam rules page shows the careful tone we suggest for anything that sounds like a verdict.

Linking your result page to the setup guide is useful if your readers are other builders; for end users, link to your own sign-up instead.

Questions from teams about to launch

Do I need a key for a free backlinks checker page?

Not for the free actions: domain, overview, stats and suggest. Those answer without a key. If you add referring domain lists, those cost 2 credits and need a key held on your server, behind rate limits, so strangers cannot spend your balance.

Will a free tool really bring sign-ups?

It can bring qualified visitors, since people searching for a checker have a clear need. Conversion depends on what comes after the result: a save button, a comparison, a gated detail view. The tool alone is only the doorway.
